Stakeholder engagement to shape Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) strategies

Stakeholders across the province are offered the opportunity to influence and shape Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development strategies and implementation plans to ensure seamless service delivery. This will take place during the Stakeholder Summit to be held on Monday, 30 November 2009 at Turffontein Race Course.

The purpose of the summit is to consult and collaborate with other spheres of government and stakeholders on the new mandate of; Agriculture, Rural Development, Veterinary Services, Sustainable Resource Management, Nature Conservations, Environmental Planning and Impact Assessment (EPIA) and Waste and Management and Air Quality Control. This will also pave the way for cooperatives governance and intergovernmental relations processes and collaboration.

Addressing the legislature during the departmental budget vote, MEC Nandi Mayathula–Khoza alluded to the fact that the department is in a process of finalising the draft rural development strategy and reviewing other strategies based on the new mandate. The summit is an opportunity to unveil those strategies to stakeholders and consult on the way forward.

Amongst those who will be presenting are, Land Bank, focusing on the financial opportunities available for agricultural and rural development; Agri-Seta on the skilling and re-skilling of workers to improve productivity; Johannesburg Fresh Produce, focusing on the availability of the market to producers. Also expected to attend the summit are representatives from Gauteng provincial government departments, municipalities, non-governmental organisation (NGOs), community based organisations, farmers unions and representatives of the private sector.
