Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Portfolio Committee on Water and Environment Affairs will tomorrow go on an oversight visit to Paarden Island, Cape Town to find out whether the shortcomings reported by the Auditor-General regarding confiscated abalone were attended to.
Owing to the short comings identified with regards to the managing and policing of the abalone industry, as well as the effective handling of confiscated abalone, the committee recommended that the Auditor-General do a cost-benefit audit of the industry.

Meanwhile, the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training will on Wednesday visit the Greater Giyani District in Limpopo to assess the effectiveness of the Kha ri Gude Literacy Campaign.
The campaign is an initiative of the Department of Education that aims to end adult illiteracy by 2014. Kha ri Gude is TshiVenda for “let us learn”.
The committee will also meet with the provincial Education Department and Further Education and Training Colleges to discuss the status of higher education in the province.
