Sports unites the world

On 12 July 2011 a delegation of 89 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will depart for Rio de Janeiro in Brazil to participate in the 5th International Military Sports Council (CISM) Military World Games.

The SANDF athletes will compete in eight sporting codes, namely Tae Kwondo (martial arts), triathlon, boxing, judo, sailing, military pentathlon, naval pentathlon and shooting.

On the evening of 11 July 2011 Lt Gen Derick Mgwebi, the Chief of Human Resources, came to wish the SANDF delegation and their Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) counterparts farewell and good luck for the Military World Games at a send-off function held at the National Ceremonial Guard Mess in Pretoria.

Approximately 6 000 athletes from 110 countries will compete in the Peace Games over the period 16 to 24 July 2011.
