Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture empowers communities to access project funding with ease

Gauteng communities and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will be given the opportunity to attend workshops which will assist them in meeting requirements to access funds awarded through the government's grants-in-aid programme.

Many of the applications for the grants-in-aid programme received by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts, Culture and do not meet the requirements, needed to successfully award funds to assist social and economic development projects. During the current financial year R6 million was distributed to assist over 300 projects involving sports, arts and culture and HIV related programmes.

"Supporting as many community projects as possible aimed at achieving developmental goals related to the provincial government's mandate is an important priority for the department. However to disburse these funds we have to receive applications meeting all the requirements that are of a very good quality. It is for this reason that, as the department we adopted an approach of empowering applicants through workshops" says MEC Nelisiwe Moerane.

This year's workshops will run until the end of October. Applications can be submitted as from October until end of March 2011 for the next financial year disbursement starting in April 2011.
