Spelling Bee competition

Learners excelling in spelling will take part in the Spelling Bee competition on Friday, 27 May at Motheo ERC in Bloemfontein.

The Spelling Bee competition now in its fourth year in the Free State province encourages and honours learners who through enjoyment reading increase their English language vocabulary and obtain better reading skills.

“Due to high rate of illiteracy among learners, the Free State Department of Education saw the need to motivate learners to engage in reading activities by introducing the Spelling Bee competition to grade 10 to 12 learners” says Education MEC Tate Makgoe who will grace the event.

About 24 learners who will take part in the competition have made it through the district and now in the finals. Each learner will be given a word to spell and if spelt incorrect will be eliminated. The winner will take home a laptop, a kindle reader, books and other prizes.

The competition forms part of the World Book day celebrations. The theme for this year Spelling Bee competition is Books, a pathway to the future”.
