The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will host a Spelling Bee competition event. The event aims to celebrate Literacy Week (1-8 September) whose purpose is to promote literacy among school children and adults.
As public libraries are custodians of literacy, the Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has embarked on a mission to motivate school-going children to become users of public libraries. Public libraries give them an opportunity to expand their knowledge through the use of printed and non-printed library materials. To celebrate Literacy Week, our Department has embarked on a Spelling Bee competition for Grade 3 and Grade 6 learners. The competition entails the following:
Spelling Bee competition
This activity is educational in nature and its purpose is to help students:
- improve their spelling;
- increase their vocabulary;
- learn concepts, and
- develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives, allowing them to gain valuable experience through the process of competition and evaluation.
It also aims to assist young people to develop their talents and have a platform to display their abilities. Learners can improve and develop the skills associated with good spelling habits.
Scheduled to take place as follows:
Libraries were invited to participate in the competition by entering school children from Grades 3 and 6 in the:
Library-based eliminations (20 July 2012) – These eliminations took place at all participating libraries during specified time frames.
Municipality-based eliminations (1-8 August 2012) – All the children who survive the library-based eliminations at participating libraries and are in the same municipal area will compete against each other.
District-based eliminations (15-22 August 2012) – Children who were successful in the municipality-based eliminations will compete against learners from other libraries in the same district.
Provincial / Final competition (6-7 September 2012 – PACOFS – Bloemfontein) – This will be the FINAL competition where the twenty-five Grade 3 and twenty-five Grade 6 winners from all of the five districts will compete. On 6 September 2012 the Grade 3 learners will compete, and on 7 September 2012 it will be the Grade 6 learners and champions for each grade will be determined.
