Transport Director-General Mr George Mahlalela is currently leading a delegation of South African transport officials to Mozambique on a two day (27 and 28 May) briefing to their Southern African Development Community (SADC) counterparts on transport arrangements for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The purpose is for South Africa to brief other countries on the African continent in detail about transport readiness for the World Cup.
The two-day briefing to SADC in Mozambique forms part of a series of briefings by transport officials from South Africa to representatives from various countries on the continent. Last Tuesday and Wednesday 18 and 19 May, a meeting was held in Accra, Ghana, which was attended by representatives from all the African countries that have qualified for the World Cup. This includes Algeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria. Last Friday 21 May, Ambassadors and High Commissioners from the continent were briefed in Pretoria.
Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele said, “This is an African World Cup and we want to ensure efficient, safe and reliable transport for all those who will be attending the tournament from various parts of our continent. The main aim of these meetings is to ensure proper coordination and communication of intra-continental transport plans and arrangements for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The purpose of these meetings include receiving reports on the travelling arrangements of the different countries in Africa, to look at the modes of transport to be utilised as well as cross border, licensing and law enforcement matters.
“The Department of Transport has been working all out to ensure that we provide efficient, reliable and safe transport services for the World Cup and we are on course to deliver on this mandate,” said Minister Ndebele.
