The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) participates at the Rand Show 2012

Rand Show One

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will once again participate at the Rand Show 2012, at Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec. This second participation emanates from the success during the Rand Show 2011, where the SANDF showcased a spectacular static capability display and demonstration for which a golden award was received.

The aim of the SANDF’s participation is to display, demonstrate and exhibit the SANDF’s capabilities which ensure that the people of South Africa are safe and feel safe. This is in line with various policies and initiatives that were undertaken by government in partnership with the people of South Africa.

This year’s participation is over the period 6 to15 April 2012 and will include the SANDF’s four Services, namely the South African Army (SA Army), South African Air Force (SAAF), South African Navy (SA Navy) and South African Military Health Services (SAMHS).

SA Army Amour Formation convoy which will depart from Bloemfontein with the Olifant Mark II Main Battle Tank on the Shongololo Tank Transporter, including support vehicles.

Saturday, 31 March 2012

SA Navy convoy consisting of 14 military vehicles including a Survey Motorboat, Harbour Patrol Boat, various armourment, hydrography and diving equipment will depart from Simon’s Town.

Both SA Army and SA Navy convoys are scheduled to arrive at Nasrec at approximately 9h00 on Monday, 2 April 2012.

Monday, 2 April 2012

  • Rooikat Armoured Car and ZT-3 Missile Launcher as well as the Zebra Recovery Technical Vehicle from the Technical Service Training Centre will depart from the Tek Base in Centurion.
  • M5/120mm Mortar, the GV 6 Self-propelled Gun Howitzer from SA Army Artillery Formation, followed by the SA Army Intelligence Formation surveillance equipment will depart from Potchefstroom.
  • During the afternoon the Mobile Mine Detection Systems, known as the Husky, Meerkat and the Duisendpoot as well as a Medium Girder Bridge from the SA Army Engineer Formation will depart from Dunnotter.

Rand Show two

  • Members of 101 Air Supply Unit with cargo parachute exhibition equipment and a crane for the movement of containers and other heavy equipment will depart from Tek Base, Centurion.
  • The 3m Diving Tank from the SA Navy will depart from Durban around 6h00 and arrive at Nasrec approximately 18h00.
  • The Rooivalk Combat Support Helicopter will land at the SANDF’s external exhibition area at approximately 10h00. Simultaneously the SAAF display equipment such as Radars, Mobile Air Traffic Control Tower as well as a MAN Supreme Baffalo Fire Truck with support equipment will arrive at Nasrec from Pretoria.

  • 2 Casspirs and 2 Ratels from 43 South African Brigade will depart from Walmansthal outside Pretoria.
  • 2 Mamba vehicles will depart from 21 South African Infantry Battalion in Doornkop, Johannesburg.
  • A Ratel utlised as an Operational Mobile Satellite system, Telecommunication systems and public address back-up system from SA Army Signal Formation will depart from Pretoria.

On Friday, 6 April 2012 at 13h00 the Minister of Defence & Military Veterans, Ms Lindiwe Sisulu will for the first time officially open the Rand Show 2012. The ceremony will include a guard of honour, a salute flight and a capability demonstration.
