South African National Defence Force to clean the city centre of Mthatha as part of the Mandela Day 67 minutes initiative

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Lindiwe Sisulu and her Deputy, Thabang Makwetla, accompanied by the Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant General Solly Shoke, will travel to Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday, 22 July 2009 to initiate a clean up of the Mthatha inner city.

This initiative will be led by troops from 14 South African Infantry Battalion in Mthatha, who will clean the streets of Mthatha in conjunction with other South African National Defence Force (SANDF) units in the area.

The 67 minutes initiative is a perfect opportunity for the SANDF to work for the people of Mthatha and at the same time honour the legacy of the former Commander in Chief of the SANDF, President Nelson Mandela.

The clean up is due to begin at 12h00, tomorrow, 22 July 2009, in the city centre of Mthatha and is expected to continue for over an hour.
