South African air force launches a new project to deal with bird strikes on its runways

The South African Air Force has embarked on an ambitious new project to combat the threat of bird strikes to its aircraft. Air Force Base Swartkop has been identified to pilot this project, which involves the use of specially trained dogs to chase birds away from the runway.

The South African Air Force in future plans to introduce border collies to reduce bird movements on runways at all its flying bases and units. This process involves the selection of a young dog with the right temperament that is trained to chase birds away from flying areas.

You are cordially invited to send a journalist and/or a photographer to cover the project at Swartkop Air Field on 23 of July 2009 at 09h45 for 10h00. The entrance to Swartkop is along the Old Johannesburg road, opposite the Air Force Gymnasium.
