South African Air force capability on display

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) air capability will be on display on Friday, 29 January 2010 when the South African Air Force (SAAF) holds a parade to celebrate its 90th anniversary at Swartkop Air Field in Pretoria.

Furthermore, the public will be provided with the opportunity to observe the readiness of the SANDF to ensure that the country hosts a successful and safe 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament.

The event will see more than 80 Air Force aircraft on display during a flypast and aerial display air capability demonstration. Four fully armed Gripen Jet fighters will for the first time be unveiled to the public. Nine Hawks will also exhibit to the public how to deal with an aircraft highjack situation.

Over 500 invited guests and more than 1 500 members of the public, including learners from schools around Tshwane, will also be treated to a 500 Security Squadron demonstration of how to protect deployed forces, para-trooping and combat search and rescue.

The Chief of the South African Air Force, Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano says: “The parade to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the SAAF will be the highlight of many milestones achieved during the past year which added value to the objectives of government.”

The parade on Friday will be preceded by a prestige evening banquette where trophies will be awarded to deserving divisions or individuals who distinguished themselves during the past year in fulfilling the objectives of the Department of Defence. The trophy for an overall winner will be presented at the parade on Friday.

The day will provide spectators with an atmosphere of festivity and family day.
