South Africa observes World AIDS Day

South Africa will join the rest of the world in marking the World AIDS Day at an event to be held in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, tomorrow morning. Held under the theme "We are Responsible", the event will be attended and addressed by the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa and Chairperson of South African National Aids Council Mr Kgalema Motlanthe, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, Mpumalanga Premier Mr David Mabuza and representatives of international organisations which include World Health Organisation and UNAIDS.

This year's World AIDS Day theme is informed by the need to work collectively in addressing South Africa's response to the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The build-up activities for World AIDS Day commenced in November with a series of community dialogues with all social partners and these dialogues will run through to June 2011. In April this year, South Africa embarked on a massive HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) Campaign which seeks to test 15 million people in the country by June next year as part of the HIV prevention strategy.
