South Africa hosts 10th Session of the South Africa-Botswana Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security, Westcliff Hotel

Today South Africa and Botswana commenced 10th Session of the Republic of South Africa-Botswana Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS) over period 19 to 21 October 2011. The 9th session of the South Africa-Botswana JPCDS was held in Botswana last year, 2010.

The agreement between governments of South Africa and Botswana on the establishment of the South Africa/Botswana JPCDS was signed in 2000 with the aim to among other things, identify areas of cooperation and establish channels for exchange of information in the fields of Defence and Security.

Starting from today the JCPDS will review progress made in the implementation of decisions made at the session held in Botswana in the areas which include military to military co-operation, training and technical cooperation as well joint border operations. They will also look at challenges in the implementation of some decisions.

Today the Commission will start with the seniors officials’ session which will prepare for the Ministerial Session scheduled for Friday, 21 October 2011.

The Department of Defence is the lead department in the JPCDS. Other departments which form part of the JPCDS include Home Affairs, Police and State Security.
