South Africa to host the Fortune/TIME/CNN Global Forum

The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) will present the 11th Fortune/TIME/CNN Global Forum, where multinational CEO’s and global leaders will gather to focus on substantive issues and opportunities in the developing world. The forum will include the dti’s annual Africa dialogue, which is designed to connect Africa to the world through sustainable partnerships. The Global Forum will be hosted from 26 to 28 June 2010, in Cape Town.

The program, themed: “New global opportunity,” will focus on business, economic and social opportunities in the developing world, whereby CEO’s of the world’s largest companies, heads of states and global leaders will discuss global economic dynamics.

TIME Magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel, said, “The new global opportunity represents the idea that global economic power is shifting to the developing world and that these markets are more than just frontiers for growth; they are the sources of new ideas and models that can be applied everywhere.”

Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies, said the 2010 Fortune/TIME/CNN Global Forum will be the business and economic centrepiece of the World Cup period. "This is a key moment for South Africa to seize the legacy of the World Cup and to advance long term opportunities for growth and prosperity,” added the minister.

Already confirmed to attend are chairman and CEOs from major multinational companies including China Mobile, Citigroup, Coca-Cola, Daimler, Deutsche Bank, General Electric, Royal Dutch Shell, and Rio Tinto. Other confirmed participants to date include French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde, U S Trade Representative Ronald Kirk, former Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and leaders from diverse fields including architect Frank Gehry, U S broadcaster Katie Couric and Commissioner of Indian Premier League Lalit Modi.

Participants from South Africa will include Chairmen and CEOs Koos Bekker of Naspers, Hendrik du Toit of Investec Asset Management, Sol Kerzner of Kerzner International, Jacko Maree of Standard Bank, Patrice Motsepe of African Rainbow Minerals, Sizwe Nxasana of FirstRand, Cyril Ramaphosa of Shanduka, Bridgette Radebe of Mmakau Mining, Maria Ramos of ABSA Group, Johann Rupert of Richemont, as well as Graça Machel, Trevor Manuel, Barbara Hogan, Francois Pienaar, and Desmond Tutu.

The 2010 Fortune/TIME/CNN Global Forum partners include Trilogy (presenting partner), Investec Asset Management, Hewlett Packard, Herman Miller, Symantec and McKinsey and Company.
