South Africa’s Human and Social Sciences Institute supports South African History Online Project Launch

Date: 30 October 2012
Venue: Iziko Museums Slave Lodge, Cape Town
Time: 09h00 – 11h30

Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the South African History Online (SAHO) Graduate Development Programme tomorrow. The programme, starting at 09h00 at the Iziko Museum Slave Lodge in Cape Town

An important element in popularising history is the building of an online encyclopaedia and educational portal that will serve the needs of learners, teachers, undergraduate and post-graduate students and academics.

SAHO’s internship programme is designed for students to gain ‘on the work experience’ as researchers, to become familiar with the use of the web as a tool for knowledge production and understanding the power of internet technology to present history and then archive in new and innovative ways.

Our interns also learn to bridge the gap between their academic training and presenting information for use by a varied audience and to enter into dialogue with audiences to capture the voices of ordinary people who have and continue to contribute to change.

Within this context, the SAHO internship programme will respond to five needs.

  • it will provide students with a platform from which to delve deeper into the history of South Africa, enriching their scholastic abilities and bringing out their academic potential
  • it equips interns and students with a hands-on experience in the workplace
  • develop skills necessary for future occupations
  • buffer their experience in the job market, giving them a competitive edge in future job searches
  • The internship programme will assist SAHO in increasing the content on its website and advance its goal of building a truly comprehensive online encyclopaedia of South African History and Culture and knowledge portal.

In addition to its Internship Programme SAHO is also involved in jointly hosting conferences, seminars and the publication of books and exhibitions with a number of South African universities.

SAHO’s strategic objective, for the next three years, is to make a difference in the five focus areas of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), as described in the Charter for Humanities and Social Sciences. These are also in line with the requirements for the human resource development plans, as articulated in the Department of Science and Technology’s ten-year innovation plan and specifically delivering on the Human and Social Dynamics (HSD) Grand Challenge.
