The Department of Energy (DoE) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) invite you to participate in a workshop to develop a solar energy technology road map for South Africa.
Date: 18 June 2012
Venue: CSIR Convention Centre, Pretoria
Time: 8h30 for 9h00
Background
Government commissioned the Council for Industrial and Scientific Research (CSIR) to develop a draft solar technology road map to provide insights on possible scenarios which will stimulate a national discussion.
A scoping workshop was held on 5 July 2011. This included participants from the DoE, DST, South African Local Government Association, South African National Energy Development Institute, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). It was agreed that consultation was needed to identify targets and priority technologies.
The IEA has been tasked with reviewing the road map drafted by the CSIR and ensuring that it is aligned with IEA guidelines.
Purpose of workshop
The workshop is intended to gather inputs from all key stakeholders, i.e. industry, government, academia and non-governmental organisations, into the development and deployment of solar energy technologies. The main focus areas will include policy and regulatory frameworks, technology and data collection.
It is expected that a cross-section of experts in technology, policy, economics, finance, social sciences and other disciplines will discuss the goals of and options for the road map.
It is envisaged that this workshop will contribute significantly to ensuring that the road map provides a solid foundation for the development of solar energy technologies in South Africa, aligned to relevant plans and policies.
Operational plan
An operational plan will be developed on the basis of the workshop outcomes and presented to government for approval and implementation. A broadly representative project steering committee will also be established to provide oversight on the development of the road map.
