Social relief for rural disaster stricken communities

The Deputy Minister for Rural Development and Land Reform Mr Thulas Nxesi cordially invites members of the media to a social relief roll out for rural disaster stricken communities to be held at Emnambithi - Driefontein Ingogo village, KwaZulu-Natal on 24 March 2011.

There will be houses built on the site that will benefit members of the community. Members of the media will also be briefed on how the department intends to provide social relief to the affected rural communities countrywide falling within the rural areas declared under the National Disaster Declaration of 21 January 2011 pronounced by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. After the briefing the deputy minister will help in distributing households’ goods at Matiwane village.

The department will spend more than R27 million to help communities affected by the recent floods. The project will cover indigent households, the unemployed, child-headed homes, pensioners and disabled people. The project is going to provide 800 emergency housing to disaster-stricken communities. Households will be given 800 lightning conductors, 800 solar lights, 800 solar radios and 800 oil lamps. The campaign of helping the affected families will also be rolled out to other seven affected provinces.
