Social Development Minister to celebrate International Day of Families and Child Protection Week

Social Development Minister Edna Molewa will on Friday, 29 May 2009, address the community and civil society to observe the International Day of Families and Child Protection Week at KwaThema on the East Rand.

South Africa is observing child protection week on 25 to 31 May, while the International Day of the family was on the 15 May.

Child protection week's theme for this year is "Caring communities protect children," and it aims to:
* create greater awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of children
* encourage families and communities to report cases of abuse
* enhance partnerships with various stakeholders and communities in order to build a caring society for children
* uphold government's commitment to protect and promote children’s rights in partnership with all sectors of society

The international day of families will be celebrated under the theme “mothers and families: Challenges in a Changing World."
