Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini to assess the re-registration process for social grants

Following an announcement in February 2012 that all recipients of social grants will be re-registered to eliminate fraud in the system, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini will on Monday visit a pay point in Diepkloof, Soweto, to check whether the process is unfolding as envisaged.

This comes after the court ruled that social grants must continue to be paid to eligible beneficiaries following the failure of two bidding companies who filed an urgent application to stop the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) from performing this function through the new service provider, Cash Paymaster Services.

The first phase of the re-registration process started on 1 March 2012 with new beneficiaries being enrolled on to a new biometric-based payment system at local offices of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) upon application. As part of this process, Sekulula beneficiaries were also enrolled and issued with a new payment biometric-based card.

Since 1 March 2012, SASSA registered over 60 000 new application.

“To date a total of 878 000 (88%) of the Sekulula beneficiaries have re-registered. We request Sekulula beneficiaries who have not yet re-registered to do so at their nearest pay points from 2 April 2012 to receive their temporary SASSA payment card,” said Minister Dlamini.

Members of the media are invited to join the Minister during the visit as to the pay point as follows:

Date: Monday, 2 April 2012
Time: 9h00
Venue: 13141 Zone 1, Diepkloof, Soweto
