The theme of this year’s commemoration focuses on young people who constitute the majority of the population in South Africa and many other developing countries. This year, the World Population Day holds significant meaning for South Africa and the global world. According to the 2010 Revision of the World Population Prospects the world population is projected to reach R7 billion on 31 October 2011. The data is also essential to monitor progress as government strives to achieve the goals and targets set out in the five priorities as well as measuring progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
