Social Development and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to launch State of the World Population Report

The Minister of Social Development Ms Bathabile Dlamini and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Officer in Charge, Mr Mark Schreiner, will address members of the media at the launch of the 2011 State of the World Population report under the theme: “People and Possibilities in a world of 7 billion’’.

On 31 October 2011, theworld population is projected to reach seven billion. A seven-day countdown campaign is planned globally, starting on 24 October 2011 (United Nations Day) leading up to the birth of the seven billionth baby a week later. This major population milestone coincides with the 2011 national census that is currently underway in South Africa.

Every year the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) prepares a global report on the State of the World Population with the view to sensitise policy makers, planners and community leaders of the priority issues affecting the structure and dynamics of the global population.

The report will focus on the following thematic areas:

  • poverty and inequality
  • women and girls
  • young people
  • reproductive health and rights
  • environmental sustainability
  • population ageing
  • urban growth
