The Minister of Energy, Ms Dipuo Peters, on behalf of South African government and the Clinton Climate Initiative (CCI), a programme of the William J Clinton Foundation will sign an MoU to assess the potential for creating a Solar Park in South Africa. A Solar Park could serve as a concentrated zone of solar development in the country. The signing ceremony will take place on 9 October 2009.
The project recognises the potential of solar energy in providing clean and secure energy on a large scale to South Africa. In 2006, the Clinton Foundation, an international non profit organisation, launched CCI to create and advance solutions to the core issues driving climate change. One area of focus for CCI is the deployment of large scale clean energy generation platforms.
CCI believes there is strong potential for large scale generation of solar power in South Africa, and would like to put itself at the service of the government of South Africa to help assess this opportunity.
Members of the media are invited to join the Minister and Clinton Foundation at the signing ceremony.
