Shongwe visits Oshoek border post

In an effort to intensify border security, Mpumalanga Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe will on Tuesday visit the Oshoek Border Post to observe the implementation of the security plans for festive season by the border security agents.

Since the beginning of December, thousands cross the province’s international borderline to go to Swaziland and Mozambique. The South African Police Service (SAPS) have since been removed and South African Defence Force (SANDF) has been re-deployed to man the country’s borders.

MEC Shongwe is expected to observe the implementation of the SAPS Festive Season Plan and to familiarise himself with challenges in relation to Ports of Entry.

Shongwe will also have an opportunity to interact with the police in order to motivate them to work harder during the festive season by participating in conducting stop and search for illegal goods and undocumented people.

The MEC’s visit has been planned as follows:

Date: Tuesday, 14 December 2010
Venue: Oshoek Border Post, Elukwatini
Time: 09h30

The MEC will be accompanied by other state security agents.

The media is invited.
