The Free State Provincial Government has, through the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, embarked on the development of the Sesotho Soccer Terminology book project. The book will be launched on the 11 May 2010, a date that will mark the 30 days countdown towards the 2010 FIFA World Cup kick-off.
The launch will be held at Andre’ Huguenot Theatre, Marble Foyer in Bloemfontein at 18h00.
Aim:
The Sesotho Soccer Dictionary book will serve as one of the legacy project for 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup and beyond. The aim of the project is to:
1) Have a reference resource for users of the Sesotho terms such as sport commentators and soccer lovers,
2) Contribute towards the Sesotho terminology development, in line with the strategic objective of promoting multilingualism, redress the past linguistic imbalances and develop the previously marginalized languages.
Processes:
The development of this book followed all the necessary steps and processes such as:
- Harvesting English source terms,
- Provision of Sesotho equivalents by linguists, translators, lexicographers, soccer experts and the stakeholders consultative workshop and
- Fusion of existing term list with some terms from the National Language Services’ authenticated multilingual list developed by the Sesotho National Language Body
