Scene is set for stimulating provincial Indigenous Games

As the Heritage Month unfolds this year’s provincial indigenous games promise an added dimension with an unprecedented number of young participants showing great enthusiasm during the selection events leading up to the Gauteng provincial games.

Organised by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, the Indigenous Games will take place on 18 September 2010, at the AW Muller Stadium, in the University of Johannesburg, Auckland Park and will be officially opened by MEC Moerane.

Says MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Ms Nelisiwe Moerane “we can only be excited that more young people are involving themselves in platforms promoting indigenous knowledge. The phenomenon including our traditions and the games we played are a very important part of our heritage which we’ve inherited from the people before us,” added the MEC.

Indigenous Games is a project that is aimed at promoting cultural activities in South African communities and also to encourage participation and value for traditional recreational activities. This event is a culmination of preliminary selections that were held at Gauteng’s West Cluster (Westonaria), South (Sicelo, Emfuleni), East (Duduza), Central (Lenasia) and North Cluster (Zonderwater Prison, Pretoria).

Participants compete in codes such as Dibeke, Khokho, Diketo, Ncuva, Intonga, Kgati, Morabaraba and Jukskei.
