SADC Ministers’ conference on the Fifteen Year Review of the Implementation of the International Conference on Population and Development Programme of Action

The Minister of Social Development in South Africa, Mrs Edna Molewa, will host a conference of Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ministers responsible for population and development on the fifteen year review of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Programme of Action (PoA).

The conference will be held in Pretoria, South Africa on 16 to 17 July 2009.

The conference will be preceded by a two-day preparatory meeting to be attended by officials of population and development from SADC Member Countries taking place on 14 to 15 July 2009.

Officials from the following countries will be participating: Malawi, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland, Uganda, Seychelles, Mauritius, and Namibia

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and partners in population and development will be represented.

The conference aims to:
* consider progress on the implementation of the ICPD-PoA in the SADC Region;
* agree on the region’s population and development priorities during the next five years, which are also the last five years of the ICPD-PoA; and
* discuss and adopt a regional report that will reflect on the highlights and challenges of implementing the ICPD-PoA over the past fifteen years.
