RTMC hosting the national participatory educational techniques competition

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in partnership with the National Department of Basic Education and the Gauteng Department of Community Safety will host the National Participatory Educational Techniques Competition as part of RTMC’s Road Safety Strategy.

The details for the competition are as follows:
Date: 1 to 2 December 2010
Venue: Birchwood Hotel, Boksburg

The National Participatory Educational Techniques is a Technology Transfer project aimed at changing learners’ attitude towards road safety issues by means of participatory education. The project is directed at high schools (grade 10 and 11) and encourages learners to identify road safety problems within their communities and to find solutions by way of research into the problems and thereby providing them with a hands-on opportunity in solving their own community’s road safety problems.

The project was successfully rolled out for the first time in 2009 with all 9 provinces represented by 10 leaner’s and one educator.

The project commences at the school learners level and only the best learners take part in the national competition. Learners are adjudicated on models (displays) and presentations illustrating their community road safety problems and researched solutions.

On 2 December 2010 the project will culminate in a national competition where winning schools will be awarded prizes to the value of R30 000 (overall winners), R20 000 (second place) and R15 000 (third place) respectively. The event will be graced by the Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr Jeremy Cronin.

The PET competition is the component of the 2015 Road Safety Management Strategy that RTMC has developed in partnership with road safety road players in the provinces and it intends producing young road safety ambassadors for 2010 and beyond.
