The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (the CRL Rights Commission), is a Chapter 9 institution established in terms of Act 19 of 2002. The Commission’s main function include among others, promotion of the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic communities. It also aims to promote and develop peace, friendship, humanity, tolerance and national unity among and within cultural, religious and linguistic communities, on the basis of equality, non-discrimination and free association.
In the recent past, the country has been inundated with news flashes, debates and discussions on the linkages between cultural practices and violence against women and children. Government, civil society, the media and Chapter 9 institutions have been working on this issue in one way or the other.
The CRL Rights Commission, as a Chapter 9 institution responsible for the promotion and protection of cultural practices, among other issues, has taken the responsibility to help facilitate a coordinated approach to this issue. This we see as the beginning of a frank, fair and open discussion of what these cultural practices that encourage violence against women and children. This the CRL Rights Commission will do as an honest broker with the aim of encouraging debate and interaction from all sectors, including the women and children sectors, the ultimate aim being that of protecting and promoting the cultural rights of all communities within the context of the Bill of Rights.
