Road safety awareness for festive season 2011

The Department of Transport and Road Accident Fund (RAF) will tomorrow, 21 December 2011, join the Friends of The Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011/2020 at the Granskop Engen Garage on the N1 road to Limpopo as part of continued efforts to reduce the carnage on South Africa's roads.

The Friends of Decade will interact with, and hand out road safety messages and tips to motorists, passengers and all road users. The Department is anticipating an increase in traffic volumes on major national roads as from tomorrow afternoon as more people break for the holiday season. Motorists are therefore advised to adhere to all the rules of the road.

As part of the 2011 December festive season road safety and Arrive Alive campaign, the team will emphasise and appeal to all road users, public transport operators (short and long distance), private motorists, passengers and pedestrians to take personal responsibility for their safety on the roads.

Law enforcement agencies will also step up operations to create more road safety awareness and reduce the carnage on our roads.

Road safety council members, the taxi industry leadership, private sector companies including Pick 'n Pay, Imperial Holdings, Brandhouse, Netcare 911, the media, individuals, organised formations as well as other Friends of the Decade of Action for Road Safety will be part of the event.

Some of the highlights during the event will be the following:

  • Special law enforcement operations
  • Road safety awareness engagements and
