Results of the 2010/11 voter participation survey commissioned by the Electoral Commission (IEC)

The Chief Electoral Officer, Advocate Pansy Tlakula, is pleased to invite you to the release of the findings of the 2010/2011 IEC voter participation survey.

In 2010, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) commissioned a survey on “voter participation”. This survey, which assessed the electorates’ and prospective voters’ readiness to register and vote in the 2011 Municipal Elections, was conducted by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), and is a follow-up to a similar survey conducted by the HSRC for previous elections.

The main objective of this survey was to rely on systematic research and empirical methods of verifying the available information on voting behaviour and elections.

Among others, the study sought to assess people’s level of interest and participation in the local government elections and matters pertaining to electoral democracy in general. It also investigated patterns of participation among women, youth, persons with disabilities, the elderly and other demographic groups in terms of elections and political activities.
