Readathon children visit National Assembly Speaker and Chairperson of Portfolio Committee on Basic Education

A group of school children will visit Parliament tomorrow to read to National Assembly Speaker Mr Max Sisulu and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Basic Education Ms Fatima Chohan.

Their visit on Thursday, 9 September 2010 is part of the annual Readathon national literacy promotion initiative carried out by the National Department of Basic Education and READ Educational Trust.

Readathon aims to encourage the practice of reading and to highlight the importance of literacy. This is done, among others, through a national literacy competition and the distribution of Readathon teachers’ handbooks to 26 000 schools throughout the country. The theme for Readathon this year is Readers Are Leaders.

The children who will be visiting Parliament will also go on a tour of the institution.

Members of the media wishing to attend the reading in Parliament’s library or to accompany the children on their tour should send their details to: Nolizwi Magwagwa
