Re-opening of the Caledon River Museum

The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation is pleased to announce the re-opening of the Caledon River Museum in Smithfield.

The museum which started operating in November 1983, hosts exhibitions which cover the era of the Anglo-Boer War and the Basotho Wars in the area as well as historical artifacts from that era. The Caledon River Museum is one of the few establishments in the province which chronicles the history of the Mohokare area as we know it today.

The museum also boasts historical items which include collections from Gen. De Wet, President Hoffman as well as archives and artifacts from the three Basotho Wars.

As part of the re-opening of the museum the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will host a Schools/Public Outreach Programme for learners and the general public in Smithfield.

This programme, which is aimed at creating awareness of the rich heritage and historical significance of the museum, will include workshops and exhibitions that will showcase some of the excellent art works and archive material housed at the Caledon River Museum.

The Schools/Public Outreach Programme will be hosted as follows:
Date: 27 to 29 March 2012
Venue: Caledon River Museum (Smithfield)
Time: 08h00 – 16h00

For further information and booking contact James Nthoba on 051 683 0427.

The museum is now accessible to the public with immediate effect.
