Public Service Week

The Northern Cape Provincial Government will be celebrating Public Service Week (PSW) along with the rest of the country from the 29 June to 3 July 2009 under the theme "Delivery of quality service for sustainable development".

PSW is an integral part of the ongoing Batho Pele Revitalisation strategy, which is aimed at instilling or rebuilding good ethics, morale and pride in public servants’ endeavours to translate the people’s contract into reality through the provision of quality services that are responding to the needs of the people. PSW seeks to broaden access to services by taking services to the people. This platform also embraces integrated approaches to effectively utilize limited government resources for improved results.

The objectives of the Public Service Week are to facilitate access to public services by the general public:
* enhance the quality and efficiency of public service delivery, ensure multi-skilling of public service cadres at all levels and ensure that senior managers are deployed to service delivery points to assist, identify and give possible solutions to administrative problems.

PSW has grown in stature over the past years, integrating with other service delivery improvement programmes such as the Izimbizo and Khaedu project.

It is for this reason that the Provincial Cabinet took a decision that all Provincial Government Departments will adopt various institutions such as child care centres, youth facilities and old age homes during this week. Services to be rendered include cleaning, repair work, counselling and making available food products, clothing and toys that have been donated by public servants.

In order to develop and maintain policies and strategies that will make a positive impact on the lives of the citizens of this province, senior and middle managers should continually be exposed to the challenges that citizens and frontline public servants face at service delivery institutions like hospitals, schools, prisons, police stations, border posts, etc. and as a result they will be deployed to these institutions through announced and unannounced visits in order to provide assistance.

Public Service Week will be launched by the Premier, Ms Hazel Jenkins in Richmond in the Pixley ka Seme Region on Monday, 29 June 2009 at 9h00 at the Skou Saal.

Members of the media are welcome to attend.
