The Public Service Commission (PSC) in collaboration with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) corruption and governance programme will hold an “ethics in public life national conference” on 21 to 22 October 2010 at the Townhouse Hotel, Cape Town.
The conference aims to provide a national platform for engagement among a wide range of experts on different aspects of public ethics, with a particular focus on conflicts of interest and corruption. The conference will bring together, for the first time, a broad spectrum of stakeholders including government officials, parliamentarians and executive members, researchers, ethics practitioners, civil society, academics and the media.
The conference will also explore the following issues:
- Restoring integrity in public life
- The effectiveness of conflicts of interest regulations (including financial disclosure laws and codes of conduct) for elected and public sector officials
- Conflicts of interest areas in public life (such as public procurement and tendering)
- Conflicts of interests situations that political parties can generate (such as the abuse of state resources, party owned corporations and party funding)
- Civil society and media perspectives
- Institutional reform and policy recommendations.
Media are invited to cover the event.
