Public Protector meets Gamagara Mayor, police top brass on Olifanshoek impasse

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela will on Thursday meet with Gamagara Mayor, Maria Diniza, and the Northern Cape provincial and regional police leadership in Kathu.

The meeting is a follow up attempt to resolve the stalemate that has seen learners from three Olifantshoek schools failing to return to school after the September recess.

Learners have stayed away from schooling since June 2012 amid protests by community members over service delivery matters.

The meeting will take place as follows:
Date: Thursday, 18 October 2012
Time: 15h00
Venue: Kathu Police Station

The Public Protector will be available to brief the media on the outcomes of the meeting shortly after holding talks with the parties. The meeting forms part of the Public Protector’s National Good Governance Week programme.

The focus week seeks to foster a collective consciousness and a common understanding of good governance. It also aims to strengthen synergies among oversight bodies and civil society entities that play a central role in promoting and enforcing good governance.

This year’s campaign focuses on ensuring a responsive service delivery through ethical leadership. Civil society is also being mobilized to play a part in promoting ethical governance, which is at the core of good governance and responsive service delivery.
