Public Protector dialogue on RDPs, taxis and other service delivery issues comes to Gauteng

Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela will on Monday, have a dialogue with various Gauteng based interest groups on RDP houses, the alleged illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis and other service delivery issues in Johannesburg.

The interests groups are mainly drawn from local and provincial government, political parties, civil society, academic institutions and general members of the public.

The dialogue is part of the Public Protector’s stakeholder dialogue, which calls on communities to join hands with a view to end maladministration and ensure responsive delivery. The focus for this year is on RDP houses and regulatory gaps in the alleged illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis.

This will be followed by a closed meeting with the provincial Legislature, where the Public Protector will discuss with parliamentarians the complaints she would have received on the day and a possible way forward.

On Tuesday the Public Protector will continue her visit in the province by hosting an outreach event at the Mafatsane Community Hall in Evaton, where she will listen to the community complaints.

The issues to be addressed at both events are drawn from systemic investigations the Public Protector is currently conducting on RDP houses and the alleged illegal conversion of panel vans into taxis. Since the launch of the programme in July, the Public Protector has visited communities in seven provinces and has been met by a host of complaints relating to RDP housing and other service delivery grievances.

The complaints were mainly related to waiting lists, procurement concerns, quality of homes, sale of RDP homes and allegations of corruption.

Other complaints ranged from basic service delivery issues, access to land and others. They included allegations of no access to land, water, roads, electricity and sale of government land by municipal officials for their private gain.

The two-month nationwide campaign is also in line with the constitutional injunction that the Public Protector should be accessible to all persons and communities.

Date: Monday, 27 August 2012
Time: 09H00
Venue: City Hall, Johannesburg
