Public Protector and Labour Deputy Minister to meet with Joe Morolong Roads Committee representatives

Public Protector Adv Thuli Madonsela will on Friday, 21 September 2012 meet with Roads Committee representing various communities in the Joe Morolong Local Municipality in Northern Cape. The meeting will also be attended by the Deputy Minister of Labour Hon Godfrey Oliphant.

The purpose of the meeting is to seek a solution to a longstanding impasse which has resulted in a serious disruption of learning activities in about 40 schools in the area. The Committee represents among others communities from villages such as Dithakong, Cassel and Glenred.

For the past four months the learners have barred from attending school by residents who are demanding construction of roads they allege had been allocated funds but were not built.

The Public Protector is currently investigating complaints from the communities which mainly relate to roads. This includes the expansion of N14. The community also demands accountability on the Kgalagadi Development Trust and wants to know how much money was spend in projects particularly the Riversand project.

Other complaints relate to various infrastructural needs such as housing, sanitation, health facilities and schools. They want a commitment from government on when their demands will be attended to.

The meeting with the Community representatives will be held as follows:
Date: Friday, 21 September 2012
Time: 10h00
Venue: Glenred Community Hall, Glenred.

After the meeting, the Public Protector, Deputy Minister and community representatives will then brief communities about the outcome of the meeting and the way forward at Ga-Mojeremane at 11h00.
