The Joint Committee on Constitutional Review is holding its second day of three-day public hearings in Limpopo today, 2 February 2010 to, amongst others; inquire into whether Sepedi is incorrectly designated as an official language in the South African Constitution.
The committee will receive written and oral testimonials on the debate that was sparked by submission received by the committee from various stakeholders, including the commission for the promotion and protection of the rights of culture, who contend that Sepedi was incorrectly designated as an official language in the Constitution.
These stakeholders argue that the correct designation of the language in question should be Sesotho sa Lebowa. The committee is in Limpopo to also seek to establish whether:
* Sepedi is incorrectly designated as an official language?
* Sesotho sa Lebowa is the correct designation?
As it did yesterday, in the Fetakgomo Local Municipality, the committee will collect testimonials which will assist in its recommendations regarding this matter.
