Public Enterprises Minister to address Durban Business Community and undertake site visit to Port of Durban

The Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Malusi Gigaba, will be visiting the Port of Durban on 14 March 2011, where he will, among other things, get an update on Transnet’s infrastructure investment programme.

The Port of Durban has developed into Africa’s busiest multi-service port, handling up to 80 million tonnes of cargo, and on average, 4 000 ships per annum. For the port to remain globally competitive, Transnet has embarked on a series of large-scale infrastructural and operational development programmes within the port.

The flagship and recently completed project is the deepening and widening of the entrance channel to the port, making it the Southern hemisphere’s largest and best-equipped commercial harbour.

The widening and deepening of the Durban Harbour entrance provides the port with a new entrance channel, which allows safe access to all vessels under all weather conditions.

Prior to the site visit to the port of Durban, the Minister will address the Durban Invest Business breakfast made up of the city’s business community at the Hilton Hotel.

The breakfast will comprise various business formations such as the Chamber of Commerce, Black Management Forum, National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and other business agencies.
