Provincial Youth Day celebrations

The Provincial Youth Day celebrations will, this year, be held on 10 June 2011 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto and other related uprisings.

The youth of 1976 filled with the conviction to build a democratic, non-racist, non-sexist South Africa belonging to all who live in it, protested against white apartheid regime and the then status quo. Thus, this day signifies the commitment of the youth of South Africa in the fight against apartheid and all forms of discrimination.

The commemoration of Youth Day is led by the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) with support from the Eastern Cape Provincial Government, as well as the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC).

This year’s theme is “Youth Action for Economic Freedom in our Lifetime”
