Provincial consultative conference on the status of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights in South Africa will be held in Northern Cape province

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (hereinafter the Commission) is mandated to promote respect for and further the protection of the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic communities; promote and develop peace, friendship, humanity, tolerance, national unity among and within cultural, religious and linguistic communities on the basis of equality, non-discrimination and free association; to promote the right of communities to develop their historically diminished heritage and to recognise community councils.

As part of nationwide consultations with cultural, religious and linguistic communities which will culminate in the hosting of the National Consultative Conference (NCC), the Commission is hosting provincial consultative conference in Northern Cape province.

This is a platform where the country will be in conversations with its Community Councils with regard to the realisation of the protection and promotion of the rights of cultural, religious and language.

Details of the CRL Rights Commission Provincial Consultative Conference will be held as follows:

Objectives of the provincial consultative conference:

  • Facilitate discussions and open dialogue on cultural, religious and language issues, programmes and projects amongst and between CRL Rights Commission’s Community Councils that will presented during the National Consultative Conference (NCC) in 2013;
  • Receiving written submissions and verbal inputs on the state of affairs relating to cultural, religious and linguistic rights in South Africa;
  • Identification and deliberation on challenges hindering social cohesion and nation building in South Africa and
  • Mobilising community-based structures and other relevant stakeholders to participate in forums, advocacy programmes and other initiatives in preparation for the NCC in February 2013 under the theme “The state of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Rights in South Africa: Twenty years into Democracy.”
