Elections will be held on 8 and 9 February 2010 to reconstitute the local Houses of Traditional Leaders in Bojanala Platinum, Ngaka Modiri Molema and Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati districts as well as the provincial House of Traditional Leaders respectively, to bring into effect the North West Houses of Traditional Leaders Act of 2009.
Act 3 of 2009 passed in November last year repealed the North West House of Traditional Leadership Amendment Act of 2005 and the House of Traditional Leaders for the province of North West Act 12 of 1994. The act makes significant amendments by introducing amongst others, a formula for representation in the local and provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders.
The act also makes provision for the following:
* The relationship between the house and the provincial houses
* The relationship between the house and government in terms of its accountability
* Responsibilities of the houses
* General matters incidental to the functioning of the houses.
Elections will be held for positions within the executive committee as well as for positions of chairperson and deputy chairperson. These will also include ballot votes for representatives to the national House of Traditional Leaders. The act dictates that a third of representatives to the national house must be women.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will conduct elections during the local and provincial polls.
