Promise delivery - the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region launches Science, Engineering and Technology week

The Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Derek Hanekom will deliver the keynote address at the launch of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Science Engineering and Technology (SET) week, scheduled for 22 to 25 October in Mauritius.

The SADC SET Week is an important regional event. It was agreed to during the SADC Meeting of Ministers responsible for Science and Technology held at the end of 2008. All credit to Mauritius, which, as Chair, was assigned the responsibility to drive the event. South Africa is the Deputy Chair.

The main objectives of the SADC SET week are to:

* increase people's appreciation for and understanding of the importance of science, engineering and technology in their daily lives
* stimulate young people's interest in studying science and mathematics at secondary school level
* encourage young people to consider furthering their studies in sciences and engineering at higher education level
* expose people to scientific and technological advances within the SADC region.

The whole idea is to de-mystify science, and to motivate Africa's children to take up the challenges of engaging with science as a career choice.

The event's three main activities include an exhibition on science and technology, a science and education fair, and a forum on science, technology and innovation. There is eager participation by SADC Member States who will focus on topics of regional importance and the relevance of scientific and technological developments for future socio-economic developments.

It is increasingly acknowledged, throughout the community that the locks on growth can actually be opened by intelligent applications of science and its attendant technologies.
