Programme of the Minister of Communications, the Honourable Radhakrishna L Padayachie (Roy) in celebration of Nelson Mandela Day

Following the successful launch of the department’s "Operation Warmer Winter" Blanket Campaign in Gugulethu, Western Cape in June, and distribution of blankets in the Free State, North West and Gauteng, the Minister of Communications, Radhakrishna L Padayachie (Roy) will celebrate Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July 2011, by distributing blankets to the poor and destitute in KwaZulu-Natal.

The South African Government in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, business, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) communities, civil society and the public at large annually commemorate and celebrate the Nelson Mandela Week and Day on 18 July in order to achieve government’s goal and priorities of economic development, poverty alleviation, job creation and achievement of a better life for all.

The Minister will hand over about 2000 blankets to various communities and institutions in the different regions of KwaZulu-Natal. These blankets were donated by various companies in the information communication technology (ICT) Sector, following a call made by the Minister during the gala dinner after his budget vote speech on 31 May 2011. This initiative is focusing on less privileged individuals who reside in the formal and informal parts of the province, with special emphasis on children, women, persons with disabilities, military veterans and senior citizens.

The areas to be covered are as follows: Mariannhill, Inchanga, and Ezinqoleni, near Port Shepstone, Lower Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

A detailed programme will be distributed later.

All media are invited.
