South Africa will host the BASIC Ministerial climate change meeting on 26 April 2010 in Cape Town. The BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India and China) group comprises of Environment Ministers from South Africa, India, China and Brazil.
This will be the second BASIC ministerial meeting to take place since COP 15 in Copenhagen. The first meeting was convened in New Delhi, India in January.
This BASIC meeting seeks to build on the discussions of the January meeting, reflect on developments in February, March and April and inform the BASIC's strategy for the forthcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) meetings and other strategic meetings such as the major economies forum.
The ministers in attendance at the meeting will be: Ms Teixeira, Minister of the Environment of Brazil; Mr Zhenhua, Vice Chairman, National Development and Reform Commission of China, Mr Ramesh, Minister of Environment and Forests of India and Minister Sonjica, Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs of South Africa.
Representatives from various South African government departments will attend. A press briefing will be convened on the completion of the BASIC meeting on Monday afternoon.
