Press conference: International Day for Poverty Eradication

October has been declared Social Development Month. Every year the Department of Social Development in collaboration with the National Development Agency (NDA), South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), provincial departments, non-governmental organisations and community-based organisations highlight key government programmes that are aimed at addressing South Africa’s socio-economic challenges. 

17 October 2011 has been declared the International Day for Poverty Eradication , therefore as part of celebrating the day, MEC Alvin Botes will be conducting a press conference on 17 October 2011.

The press conference will be held in Roodepan at the AFM Roepersfontein Centre at 9h00. This will be followed by a full day of service delivery where the community of Roodepan can access the Services of the Department of Social Development, SASSA, Home Affairs and South African Police Service.

The following are basically services which can be accessed from the Roepersfontein Drop Inn Centre.

Drop-In-Centre is a physical structure from where a basket of services are rendered to vulnerable groups within a community. These services meet the rights and needs of beneficiaries for prevention, survival, protection and development of community members. The AFM Roepersfontein Drop-In-Centre has been funded by the department for the last six years.

The AFM Drop-In-Centre is located within the Sol Plaatje Municipality in the township of Roodepan. AFM Roepersfontein Drop-in Centre renders the following services/programmes:

  • Elderly programmes
  • Women programmes
  • Youth programmes
  • Children’s programmes
  • Spiritual programmes
  • Commemoration of National and International Days, for example: Youth Day, Woman’s Day, HIV Day and World Food Day
  • Food and Clothing Bank are also operating from the Drop-In-Centres. The food & clothing bank is used as emergency resources that are responsive in times of need
  • A Soup Kitchen is also operating from the Drop-In-Centre and act as a safety net for the poor and provide nutritious meals on a daily basis
  • Tina Cowley Reading Centre
  • Early Childhood Development Centre
  • Youth Service Centre.
