President Jacob Zuma will on Tuesday, 9 October 2012, visit the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) site, near Carnarvon in the Northern Cape.
The President will be accompanied by the Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor, Deputy Minister Derek Hanekom, Northern Cape Premier Hazel Jenkins, the district and local municipality mayors and other dignitaries.
The visit to the SKA site follows the SKA Organisation's announcement in May this year that South Africa and its African partner countries will host the major part of the SKA.
Immediately after the President's visit to the site, on the same day, he will attend a public participation programme in Carnarvon, hosted by the Department of Science and Technology.
Other highlights of the day include a presentation by Dr Bennie Fanaroff, the Director of the South African SKA Project Office, regarding the way forward for the SKA.
Media are invited.
