The Department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform is continuing its support of the Masibambisane Rural Development Initiative (MRDI), which aims at equipping communities in the rural areas to develop themselves, especially in the area of agriculture.
Having started in Nkandla and Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, the MRDI is chaired by President Jacob Zuma in his capacity as a community member and was successfully launched in the province in Qumbu in November last year.
Following an invitation by the Traditional Leaders, the President will be visiting projects in Peddie and Butterworth on Sunday, 29 April in a bid to roll-out the MRDI and the department has supported the MRDI programmes by way of a roll-out of its Zero Hunger Campaign.
Department MEC Zoleka Capa has stressed the importance of engaging traditional and religious leaders in the eradication of poverty and underdevelopment in their areas and is pleased to join the President in this initiative, which also encourages involvement of key stakeholders including business and NGOs.
The President will be accompanied by key investors who are keen in the poverty eradication and the economic growth of the province through food production and rural development initiatives.
Details of the visits:
- Between 8am and 10:30am on Sunday, 29 April 2012, the President will visit projects that include the rural housing initiative and will join the community in ploughing fields at Mgababa village in Peddie. He’ll also visit pineapple and soya beans.
- At 11am the main event at Tanga Village in Butterworth will start. The President will visit maize fields and other projects promoting rural livelihoods.
