President Jacob Zuma will tomorrow, 11 July 2012, officially signal the construction of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge Project in Ludondolo near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
The Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge is being constructed by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) in partnership with the Eastern Cape Department of Roads and Public Works (ECDRPW). The bridge cuts across the Mbashe Rivers between Ndondolo Village in the Mbashe Local Municipality and the Mvezo village in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality.
The bridge and road will link Mvezo village to the N2, and reduce the travel distance to Idutywa by nearly 50 km. The construction of the bridge will also reduce the travel time between Mvezo and the N2 by approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The bridge will provide improved access to approximately 20 000 people living in 21 villages in the respective local municipality areas.
The Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge is a fitting tribute to former President Nelson Mandela, as this development will improve the lives of the people of Mvezo - his home village and surrounding areas, ensuring a great legacy for Madiba who has devoted his life to improving the lives of all people.
President Zuma will also visit a brick making plant in Ludondolo. He will also visit the Packhouse and Agricultural activities in the River Valley Project before visiting the Nelson Mandela Legacy Bridge.
