President Zuma to officially open the access road between Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park

A new access road linking the Voortrekker Monument Heritage Site and Freedom Park will be opened at an official function by President Zuma on the 16th of December 2011, Day of Reconciliation. Following various consultations between the governance structures and management of both institutions, it was agreed that a collaborative framework and other programmes be embarked upon. The process symbolises the fact that both institutions cannot afford to exist without acknowledging each other’s role in reconciliation.

“The access road linking Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park, appropriately named Reconciliation Road, marks a poignant milestone of our young democracy. It is a positive development for our maturing democracy and a deep reflection of social cohesion and unity. The two institutions will start implementing joint programs for visitors,” said Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile. President Jacob Zuma will officially unveil a plague to symbolise the opening of the access road. He will also be at the event.
